Tutoring & Mentoring
OGB’s signature program is the After School Tutoring and Mentoring Program. We work closely with the Sycamore Community Schools to identify students in 1st – 8th grades who would benefit from academic and mentoring support.
We enroll approximately 45 students per year, many who are transported by Sycamore District buses for two hours of after school tutoring, three days per week. We have a cheerful 6,000 sq. ft. “home”, which offers plenty of space for our volunteer tutors to engage with our OGB students, offering them the support needed to reach academic success. The progress of our students can be seen in improved grades, enhanced self-confidence, and the demonstration of life skills that they can take into higher education and into the work force.
Program runs September – May.
Students and families commit to program requirements, including attendance, goal-setting, and parent involvement.
Students work individually or in small groups with trained, dedicated tutors.
Transportation home can be provided by our OGB van.
How to Help
OGB After School Tutoring is successful due to the wonderful volunteer tutors and generous donations supporting the program. Please consider helping by becoming a tutor, donating an after school snack or making a financial contribution.
“I became a tutor at OGB 8 years ago because I had been looking for a way to directly help kids with their academic skills and self-confidence…I saw the tutoring environment and decided I had to contribute to this incredible program!"
Being involved in this program means so much to me. It is a way to provide homework assistance, reading and math skills, organizational skills, and so much more, but in an environment that is relaxed, friendly, comforting, nurturing, and fun. It is just the best of both worlds!”
